AFTER getting caught up on high voltage overhead power lines whilst working in Cooma, electrician Peter McNally decided it was time for a career change.

"I spent a bit of time in intensive care after that workplace accident and almost died so when I recovered I decided it was time to try something else," Mr McNally said.

"I discussed it with my boss and he said he needed someone to look after safety on the site so I retrained and became a safety professional."

Mr McNally said after leaving Cooma he spent some time working in Canberra before moving to Wollongong eight years ago and opening his own business, PDM Safety Consultancy.

He offers occupational health and safety training specialising in confined spaces, working at heights and first aid courses across a wide range of occupations including construction, manufacturing, heavy and light industry and even office work.

"In fact almost everything except mining," he said. "The confined spaces training is very specialised and it could be that someone has to work in a silo, under a building, in a situation where the oxygen supply may be depleted or where the worker may be exposed to engulfment from a substance."

Mr McNally said most of the training was conducted on-site so long as the necessary facilities were available, and that his consultancy work extended to writing safety manuals for companies, and setting up and implementing safety practices in all workplaces.
